Best Day Trips from Prescott, Arizona

Prescott is a convenient base for exploring the Verde Valley and Sedona without changing hotels every night. Within roughly one to two hours, you can explore Jerome's mining history, spend an afternoon in Old Town Cottonwood, ride the Verde Canyon Railroad from Clarkdale, visit historic and archaeological sites around Camp Verde, or head into Sedona's red rock country.

The best choice depends on the day you want. Jerome is the easiest option for history and galleries, Cottonwood works well for restaurants and wine tasting, Clarkdale is the choice for the Verde Canyon Railroad, Camp Verde offers history and archaeology, and Sedona delivers the biggest change in scenery.

Best Day Trips from Prescott

Jerome
Best for: History, galleries, mountain views and a half-day trip

Jerome sits high above the Verde Valley on Cleopatra Hill and remains closely connected to Arizona's copper-mining history. Today, its steep streets are filled with historic buildings, galleries, shops, restaurants and wide views across the valley.

  • Drive: Roughly one hour from Prescott
  • Route: State Route 89A over Mingus Mountain
  • Allow: Half a day, or longer when combined with Cottonwood
  • Good for: History, art, photography and couples

State Route 89A is scenic but winding. Use our Prescott to Jerome guide for more planning information, or compare Jerome hotels if you decide to stay overnight.

Cottonwood & Old Town
Best for: Wine tasting, restaurants and a relaxed afternoon

Old Town Cottonwood makes an easy companion to Jerome because restaurants, tasting rooms and shops are concentrated along a walkable downtown district. Rather than treating Cottonwood as a checklist of attractions, give yourself time for lunch, browsing and wine tasting if that interests you.

  • Drive: Roughly 1 hour 10 minutes from Prescott via Jerome
  • Good combination: Jerome + Cottonwood
  • Good for: Couples, food, wine and leisurely sightseeing

For a broader overview of Cottonwood, Jerome, Clarkdale and Camp Verde, see our Verde Valley guide.

See our wine tasting guide and Verde Valley guide for more ideas.

Clarkdale & Verde Canyon Railroad
Best for: Scenic rail travel and travelers who prefer sightseeing without hiking

Clarkdale is the departure point for the Verde Canyon Railroad, which travels through the Verde River canyon along a route largely inaccessible by road. The train excursion takes roughly four hours, so it should be treated as the main activity rather than a quick stop between other towns.

  • Drive: About an hour from Prescott
  • Allow: Most of the day when taking the train
  • Good combination: Clarkdale + Cottonwood if the schedule allows
  • Good for: Couples, families and multigenerational groups

Advance reservations are wise during popular travel periods.

Camp Verde
Best for: Archaeology, regional history and family sightseeing

Camp Verde offers a different kind of Verde Valley day. Major attractions include Montezuma Castle National Monument, Fort Verde State Historic Park and other sites connected with the area's Indigenous and military history.

  • Drive: Roughly one hour from Prescott, depending on route
  • Allow: Most of a day if visiting several attractions
  • Good combination: Camp Verde + Cottonwood
  • Good for: Families, history and archaeology

The route toward Camp Verde also provides an alternative for drivers who would rather avoid State Route 89A over Mingus Mountain.

Sedona
Best for: Red rocks, hiking, scenery and guided adventures

Sedona requires a longer day but provides the biggest visual contrast with Prescott. Red rock formations, trails, scenic drives, galleries, restaurants and tours can easily fill the entire visit.

  • Drive: Roughly 1½ hours each way in normal conditions
  • Allow: A full day
  • Leave early: Traffic and parking can add time during busy periods
  • Good for: Hiking, photography, scenery and tours

Don't try to see all of Sedona in one day. Choose a hike, scenic area or guided activity, add lunch and one other priority, then leave some margin for traffic. See our Prescott to Sedona guide for more planning information.

See our Sedona guide for things to do, sightseeing and trip-planning ideas before making the drive.

Day Trips from Prescott FAQ

What is the best first day trip from Prescott?
Jerome is an easy first choice because it is relatively close and combines history, galleries, restaurants and mountain scenery. Cottonwood can be added for a longer Verde Valley day.

Can you visit Jerome and Cottonwood on the same day?
Yes. The two destinations pair naturally. Spend the morning in Jerome, then continue into the Verde Valley for lunch, shopping or wine tasting in Cottonwood.

Can you visit Sedona from Prescott in one day?
Yes. Sedona works well as a full-day trip from Prescott, but leaving early gives you more time for sightseeing and helps account for possible traffic or parking delays.

Can you combine Jerome, Cottonwood and Clarkdale?
Yes, but don't overpack the day. If you are riding the Verde Canyon Railroad, build the itinerary around the train schedule and add Cottonwood or Jerome only if time allows.

Is State Route 89A through Jerome scenic?
Yes. The route crosses Mingus Mountain before descending through Jerome into the Verde Valley. It is also winding and mountainous, so drivers uncomfortable with mountain roads may prefer another route.
